Mayumi nodded a few times at the blonde girl seated next to her. She understood what Ayame was telling her - she really did - but Mayumi had never been optimistic when it came to things like relationships. She couldn't even properly express that she may or may not have a crush on someone.
And who was she trying to kid here? Mayumi definitely was developing a crush, but she didn't feel like she wanted to.
It felt stupid to her - letting her feelings take over the role her brain had played for years. She had never felt anything like lust or sympathy toward people and was a babbling mess when it came to expression those feelings.
She shook the thoughts from her head and focused on Ayame's words. she had mentioned Ren, and waiting for him. Mayumi instantly fought a knowing smirk. She had guessed something was going on between them from the first time she and Ayame had met.
"Like I said," Mayumi sighed tiredly. "You're lucky - to have someone to wait for. What's it like?" That last bit had slipped out quickly before Mayumi could stop it. She cringed a bit, wondering for a brief moment if Ayame was beginning to think she was crazy.

The blunt, cold realization that she might not have appreciated Ren and Yousuke fully hit hard and fast, like a bullet. In the pit of her stomach, she was regretful once again. However, she knew that it wasn't too late to fix things with them, and there wasn't much to fix.
Still, she felt bad for Mayumi. It wasn't pity necessarily, but a sadness that she couldn't relate to, and felt horrible about it. All her life, even when put in difficult situations, she was never completely alone, and even when it felt that way, she had good memories to look back on and cheer her up. Mayumi didn't have anything like it.
"You're lucky - to have someone to wait for. What's it like?" the dark-haired girl asked in a weary tone.
Facing the opposite shelf again, Ayame chucked softly to herself. "I don't really know how to explain it." she said quietly. "It's... reassuring, I guess, to know that at the end of the tunnel, there's someone waiting there. Like, you go through all these obstacles, and you know that there's a prize in the end." She turned her head to face Mayumi. "He's the prize."
She sighed and looked back at the wall. "So," she began, the slight curve of a smirk now painted across her face. "Has anyone caught your eye yet?"

The blond girl sighed and averted her eyes. Mayumi saw the ghost of a smirk begin to appear and was immediately on edge. "Has anyone caught your eye yet?"
Mayumi's cheeks flamed, and she moved her gaze to her lap, hoping her friends hadn't noticed. Though, if Mayumi were being honest with herself, she would have known that trying to hid her blush was pointless because the way her voice had dropped gave everything away.
"I... um," she fished for the correct words. Her brain wasn't working anymore. "I guess, but I probably scared him off, so it's not really important."
Her cheeks heated up again. It was odd for Mayumi to be talking about something like this so openly and calmly. The last time she had felt anything for a boy was in her first few years of school, and she had told him that he smelled bad and pushed him off of the swing.
"I don't know if you know him," Mayumi said, praying that would steer the conversation in another, less-embarrassing direction.

"I don't know if you know him,"
Ayame's smirk became a sincere smile. "But I might!" she chirped. "Who is the lucky boy?" she asked, winking. She felt a bit like Kettaro. Prying and persistent. But she had to know these things, didn't she? This was what normal teenage girls talked about, was it not? After all, Mayumi knew about Ren, so shouldn't they know about each other's... significant other?
Mayumi was such a shy, quiet girl. Ayame could only imagine what kind of guy she was interested in.
"A-Ah, Mayumi, if you really'd rather not say, it's alright!" she said, leaning towards her friend, who was looking away, embarrassed.

Mayumi blushed again, but let a smile tug at her lips like she did when she thought of the boy. It was true that she was more than likely smitten, but admitting it would be... well, admitting it.
Her eyes moved to Ayame, and the smile on her face made it clear that Mayumi could trust her. She sighed, and smiled shyly at her friend.
"His name is Kakeru Shizuma," Mayumi said, letting her head loll to the left and peeking around to Ayame. "He's a singing major as well, but I'm sure I've completely scared him off."
She was being honest - Mayumi really did believe that she had frightened the boy with her rudeness during their last meeting, but she was happy to be able to talk to Ayame about it. They were bonding, and Mayumi liked it.

"His name is Kakeru Shizuma," "He's a singing major as well, but I'm sure I've completely scared him off."
Kakeru Shizuma. The name sounded familiar, but she couldn't match a face to it. Shizuma, she thought. "What did you do to scare him off?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. Sure, Mayumi was a little intimidating, but how shy could a boy be to be scared off by someone with her... stature?
"I mean, what could you do to scare him, Mayumi? You're a pretty girl, you couldn't scare anyone completely away." she half-chuckled, closing her eyes and leaning back against the shelf. Kakeru Shizuma, huh? She wasn't the best at playing matchmaker, in fact she was flat-out mediocre, but if she could find this kid, she could somehow get the message across from Mayumi.

Mayumi folded her lips, considering Ayame's question. She vividly remembered her encounter with the boy about a two weeks ago, but she had never really found out if his actions were a result of a timidness that came naturally to him, or because Mayumi had acted like a brute and screamed at him.
"I sort of... yelled at him, I guess," she began, then, feeling the need to justify it to Ayame, Mayumi added, "but he startled me! Sneaking up on someone while they play isn't something people should do!"
Mayumi sighed quietly. "I don't know much about him at all, but he blushes a lot and is a really amazing pianist..." she trailed off, her own blush creeping up on her cheeks, "And I'm kind of hopeless when it comes to crushes."

"I sort of... yelled at him, I guess, but he startled me! Sneaking up on someone while they play isn't something people should do!"
Mayumi's defensiveness surprised her. Normally, she wouldn't make excuses for her actions, or so she never noticed. This guy really had her then, didn't he? She sounded so anxious and nervous too. It was kind of cute, it reminded her of talking to Kettaro about Atticus.
Mayumi sighed quietly. "I don't know much about him at all, but he blushes a lot and is a really amazing pianist..." "And I'm kind of hopeless when it comes to crushes."
Ayame squealed, covering her mouth with both hands. "You're in love!" Her inner girl was really getting obnoxious, but she couldn't help it. Crushes were so sweet, despite all the constant possibility of well, heartbreak. She turned to Mayumi and smiled. "So when are you gonna talk to him again?" she asked.

Mayumi's eyes widened at the word "love." She didn't believe she was in that deep, but she had also never really had feelings for someone, so she couldn't classify them. She figured, since Ayame had Ren, the blonde knew more about the subject than Mayumi herself.
Ayame smiled at her and asked, "So when are you gonna talk to him again?"
Leaning her head back again, Mayumi replied, "Tomorrow after classes, if I don't chicken out." With a light shrug, she added, "I don't know what to do or say - which is awful - and I might just reschedule again."
Mayumi knew she couldn't do that, not again. She had canceled and rescheduled on the poor boy so many times already, but she didn't know what to do with the uneasy, fluttering feeling she got when she thought of him, never mind what happened when she was around him!
"I think I'm just not meant to..." she trailed off, waving her hand dismissively. "Be with someone? I don't know, this all sounds childish." Mayumi wasn't above pouting, but she really didn't want to.

Ayame looked at her, a bit confused. Was it childish? Maybe far-fetched, and unrealistic, but not exactly childish. Childish would be rushing into something without thinking about the outcome. However, this was a bit more about luck.
"There's everyone for someone," she said pensively, staring at her lap. "Or so they say." She smiled thoughtfully. "Whether it's Kakeru or not, it's you that has to do the looking until you find out who it is."

Mayumi looked at her friend, hoping to convey that she was thankful for having her around. But Ayame wasn't looking at her. Just as the dark-haired girl was about to open her mouth to properly thank her friend for putting up with her stupid romance-babble, Ayame spoke up first.
"There's everyone for someone, or so they say." A thoughtful smile tugged at the blonde's lips. "Whether it's Kakeru or not, it's you that has to do the looking until you find out who it is."
Mayumi smiled a bit as well, admiring the books again."You could say that, and maybe I'll keep secretly hoping I'll get lucky." It took her a moment to realize what she had said, and she was suddenly scrambling to clear it up. "I-I mean, that I'll get lucky and meet someone that... likes me, y'know. Shit."
Giving up, Mayumi hoisted herself up from the floor, her eyes glued to the books and her cheeks the color of roses. It seemed she had a knack for saying the wrong things this week.

"You could say that, and maybe I'll keep secretly hoping I'll get lucky." Mayumi said, instantly becoming flustered. "I-I mean, that I'll get lucky and meet someone that... likes me, y'know. Shit."
Frustrated with herself, she stood up. Ayame covered her mouth in an attempt to not laugh, but she giggled nonetheless. Mayumi seemed to have a habit of messing up her words in awkward situations. Using the shelf for support, she stood beside her, noticing a red glow on her cheeks.
"I know what you meant." she said calmly, placing her hand on Mayumi's shoulder.
She turned slowly and looked at the books her friend had her eyes fixed on. Romance novels? How ironic. Much more ironic was the fact that Mayumi was pretending to be interested in them to avoid conversation. Sighing to herself, Ayame pretended along with her, laughing inwardly at such cheesy titles. They all reminded her a bit of the terrible play she and Ren bonded over. Peering over at Mayumi, she wondered if she and Kakeru would ever be that way.
