Character(s): Mio Otsuka, anyone that wants to join Time: 8PM, right before dark Location: Rooftop
The view was amazing, unlike anything he'd ever seen before. For as far as he could see, everything looked so small and so unreachable. The stars looked closer than anything he could see in the distance. The remains of a sunset hung wearily in the sky, waiting for the dark of night to wash them away. A cool breeze coming from the west gently swept through his hair.
He raised his shoulders just enough that the scarf around his neck would cover his mouth. Fall nights weren't this cold where he was from, and it would take some getting used to. With his hands shoved roughly in his pockets, and his dark eyes fixed on the last tiny sliver of sun disappearing behind the horizon, he inwardly wondered why he came to the roof in the first place
In movies, characters would always have the best experiences someplace like a roof, where they felt like they were on top of the world, right? Or so they did in the movies he'd seen, with the princesses and the dragons and the happily ever afters. However, life isn't a fairy tale or a movie of any kind. You can't pick and choose what happens, things just happen to you, and you react; that's life. But even so, Mio stood on the rooftop, leaning against the railing with his back to the wind, watching another day pass him by. Another day of being unaware and unsure of what the next day would bring, but still being hopeful that after a few more of these days, the movie would start and he'd get his happy ending.
He smiled mournfully. "Am I happy?" he asked himself, rather loudly.

Arlette decided to pay the rooftop a visit.
She hadn't been there in a while, busied by classes and whatnot to actually have therime to come up here. Much as she'd didn't wishto admit it, part of her wanted to stay away from the rooftop, she didn't really wish to cross paths with that jerk Ren again.
Sighing as Arlette pushed open the doors to the rooftop, she couldn't help but let out a confused-sounding 'huh' when she saw a boy already there, the cool breeze running through his hair.
Then Arlette heard something. "Am I happy?"
Not knowing if the boy had already sensed her arrival, Arlette chuckled and said good-!-naturally, "well, I wouldn't know."

Still in a bit of a trance, Mio was startled by an answer to his inward question. "Well, I wouldn't know."
Turning bright red with embarrassment and cold, he spun around to see a girl with long hair, the same color as his mother's, standing behind him. She had soft features, but intense eyes, that glinted with secrecy. When he had calmed back down, he smirked behind his scarf and turned back to look at the sky, resting an elbow against the railing and cupping his chin in his hand.
"It's a bit impolite to sneak up on someone isn't it?" he asked coyly, peering over his shoulder and curling one side of his mouth.

He'd been sitting there the entire time - long enough to hear the dark-haired boy ask the world below him if he was happy, and long enough to see a girl push open the door and make her way to the boy.
Max watched - out of sight from the two - as they exchanged a few words and the boy placed his chin in the palm of his hand, asking the girl something Max couldn't hear very well. Secretly, he hoped they were going to argue. Max loved watching arguments between people he didn’t know.
They did nothing, though.
He sighed and, realizing his peaceful evening on the rooftop was over, shoved himself up from where he was sitting - wedged in a dark corner - and moseyed up to the couple. His hands were stuffed deep into his pockets while his eyebrows knitted together. Max stopped walking a few feet from the girl’s back, and kicked a pebble in their direction.
“Technically,” Max was speaking to the boy, “You both snuck up on me.” He offered them a coy smile, cocking his head as if he were speaking to children. “I’ve been up here most of the night.”

"It's a bit impolite to sneak up on someone isn't it?" The firs boy asked as he turned his face to face her.
'Hmm, well, you can't really-" Arlette stepped forward, and was about to continue, but then another boy -a brown-haired one she did not recognise- emerged from some dark corner. She looked at brown-haired boy as he spoke to both of them. "You both snuck up on me," then a coy smile appeared on his face while cocking his head, reminding her of a bemused parent, "I've been up here all night."
"Sneaking up, huh?" Arlette raised an eyebrow, and glanced at them both, tapping her finger against her lips before deciding on continuing in a slightly singsong tone. "What use could have come out on that anyway? I wasn't even fully aware you two were here."

Max chuckled and looked to his feet. The girl had a point, he knew, but it didn't matter to him. He'd been sitting alone for so long that he welcomed the intruders. But still, the boy's actions had made him laugh a bit, and the girl seemed just a tad uppity for Max's taste.
He clicked his tongue. "But you interrupted Wonder Boy's melodramatic monologue," Max told the girl, his eyes then flashing to "Wonder Boy." "I thought it was gonna get good, too!"
Taking a few steps forward toward the railing the dark-haired boy was leaning on, Max composed himself like the other boy had. "'Am I happy?'" he mimicked, turning to the others once he was satisfied with his performance. "That's a classic man, really."
He laughed again, leaning back against the railing and folding his arms across his chest. A lifeless smirk played at his lips as Max watched his company. It really had been hilarious.

"'Am I happy?'" "That's a classic man, really."
Mio straightened his expression and pursed his lips a little behind his scarf. This guy was pressing his buttons a bit, but he wasn't going to let it get to him. "You're mocking me." he said coldly, not even bothering to turn to him. "That's a bit worse than sneaking up on someone without even realizing so, is it not?"
Raising an eyebrow, he rolled his eyes and turned back towards the stairs. This is what I get for trying to be alone. he thought, bitterly. He put his hands deeper into his pockets, pushing his chin against his chest to block the cold wind, and walked to the door leading back into the academy. "I'll catch you guys later." he said gruffly, heading back into the building.

Max shrugged in response to the boy's question. Could he not take a joke? It didn't matter much, but Max didn't feel like getting into an argument tonight - he was too tired. Though, just as Max was about to apologize, the boy started walking toward the stairs, hunched over, like he was upset or something. Max was making enemies already. Shit.
"Hey, wait!" he called after the retreating boy, "Don't leave, dude, I'm sorry, it was a bad joke!"
Shit! Max thought again, wondering if chasing after him would be too much. He hadn't meant to make the boy angry, but he hadn't meant to make him ecstatic to be there, either. It didn't make sense, but most of what Max thought didn't make sense.
He wasn't a very sympathetic person, either, not after what he'd been shoved through during his childhood - bouncing from home to home didn't give one a great sense of sympathy, as far as Max understood.
"Really! I mean it!" he shouted, watching the boy turn the corner.

"Really! I mean it!"
Mio stopped, and moved the scarf away from his mouth, turning back to Max, who stood flustered at the top of the stairs. He gave him a serious, but blank, unreadable face. "I'm not upset." he said, shrugging. "So don't worry about it. I have to head back to my dorm, so I'll see you around." he said calmly, waving his hand.
He flashed Max a sincere, closed-mouth smile and turned back to head down the hall. Could he consider this... the start of a friendship? Either way, he made a note to self that he would cross paths with Max again, hopefully making it better than this occasion.

"Dude, just let it go," Arlette's eyes flicked to the boy who was about to leave, and then the boy who had shot the joke. Someone's over sensitive. "Brown-eyes here didn't mean it."
"Really! I mean it!" Brown-eyes shouted as the Monologue Boy turned the corner. Arlette glanced over at him, her pale brown eyes sort of wide as if to say, "really?"
"So don't worry about it. I have to head back to my dorm, so I'll see you around." The dark-haired boy replied anyways, making his way further away from them. "It's not even really near curfew yet," Arlette blurted out, and after which, she sort of wished she hadn't said it. It was probably adding fuel to some sort of fire.
