Characters: Asuka Tomoe and Kenji Takuto! Time: 5:00 P.M. Location: a quiet, subdued coffee shop in the back of the restaurant district.
They hadn't talked much on the way to the place Asuka had in mind, which was alright. It gave her time to think. The closer she got, the more she began to wonder why she was doing this - she was going out with a stranger, after all. Was this a date? Would Kenji perceive this as a date? She wasn't quite sure, and if he asked, she'd skillfully evade the question.
A bell above the spotless glass door dinged resonantly as Asuka entered, her companion following in her wake. There was no one else inside - even the worker had disappeared somewhere in the back of the room. "Hey!" she yelled in an attempt to get some service. Much to her chagrin, there was no response.
Asuka sighed, leading Kenji to a pair of plush-but-decrepit arm chairs that faced each other, cloistered nicely in the back of the tiny, dimly lit space. "So, while we wait for the worker to emerge from wherever they've gone off to..." she said, sitting down and placing her messenger bag off to the side. "Tell me about yourself, Kenji." She was genuinely curious towards what made the boy tick - he seemed... different than most, to say the least. At any rate, it couldn't hurt to ask.

Kenji's thoughts were muddled as he walked next to Asuka through the town. Where she was leading him, Kenji didn't know, nor did he really care. He could have been the lamb she was leading to slaughter, but Kenji just... didn't care.
More than anything he wanted to know more about her because Kenji could tell Asuka wasn't merely a pretty face. The dark-haired boy could tell that there was more to her, maybe things that she didn't even know about herself. Inwardly, the boy shrugged, walking after Asuka into a coffee shop that he had no clue existed.
Walking behind her - even after he had requested to open the doors on their journey -, Kenji caught a whiff of what he assumed to be her shampoo. It smelled amazing - like summer and clean and girl - and Kenji nearly walked into her back while contemplating the correct words to describe it.
The place was completely empty, but there were a few bumps and knocks from the back room. Someone else was definitely there, but very obviously didn't care if there were customers. Kenji didn't know how someone could have ignored Asuka's shout.
He followed her once again to a set of arm chairs in a corner, and smiled behind his scarf. She brought them to a secluded area even though there was not another soul to be seen in the entire shop. Maybe he was reading too much into this, but he felt a little bit more excited to be getting to know Asuka in a more personal manner in a more personal setting.
"So, while we wait for the worker to emerge from wherever they've gone off to..." Asuka said, sitting down in one of the chairs. "Tell me about yourself, Kenji."
Kenji sat down as well, pulling his backpack and scarf from his body and setting them next to his chair. Running a hand through the hair that refused to stay pulled back, he said, "It's nothing exciting really - my dad left when I was little, so it's been my mom and I since I can remember." he chuckled once, looking at his lap instead of the girl across from him. "It's actually his leaving that started my interest in music. He left behind thousands of cassettes and CDs - I took them before my mom could get rid of them." Kenji felt like he was babbling, but Asuka was making no efforts to shut him up, so he continued. "I started teaching myself the guitar not long after that, and finally got one of my own. I guess that pretty much sums it up."
When he finished, Kenji's gaze moved up to look at Asuka again. She didn't look bored or annoyed, which he took as a good sign. Ending on a half shrug, Kenji said, "Your turn,"

Asuka listened intently as Kenji threw out details pertinent to his past - his father had abandoned him as a child, he liked the music that his father liked, he played the guitar(!!!) and was most likely a music major. Funny. If appearances counted for anything, she'd have pegged him as an actor; his facial expressions were often vaguely akin to the aloof expressions of veteran male stars. But, then again, his voice resounded as dulcet tones in her ears; he was probably a very, very good singer.
"I knew you played the guitar," Asuka responded, feeling a little better that she'd been able to scry at least a few trivial details about him. "Your fingers - they were rough, calloused."
Your turn, Kenji'd said, gaze moving from his lap and into the realm of eye contact. Asuka pondered this for a moment, wondering what to tell him. No one'd asked her to tell anything about herself before, at least, not in a circumstance like this one.
"Me?" Asuka mused, looking curiously at him. "Well, I suppose I'll go about it in the same fashion you did. My family was kind of worthless. They were stupid and complacent - I didn't fit in at all, or at least, I'd like to think so - and their presence was pretty much pointless. I read as a kid, I read a lot and I still do. When I was twelve, I tried out for a play, and realised that I loved it... that's pretty much it. My past is hardly interesting."
It was inevitable that Kenji pay her full attention; he was so very obviously smitten with her that there was no way he'd do anything else. Having talked to him a little more, Asuka had been able to determine a little more about his personality traits, but he still seemed different to her. Mysterious. Regardless, she couldn't help but launch into a long-winded exposition on the details she'd been able to pick up.
"You're a singing major, judging by the way even your ordinary talking voice is pleasing to the ear. You like coffee, which is good, because this is a coffee shop, after all." She paused, chuckling lightly. "You prefer subdued, mellow music - possibly Celtic or American Blues or Classics? You're six feet tall, give or take, and your hair is almost the same colour as mine. You've never dyed it and it's naturally straight, though your split ends could use some work. You're using a crappy hair tie to keep it back, and it's not cut to be tied back, anyway. I also get the impression that you read almost as much as I do - your backpack is unzipped and I see a copy of House of Leaves sitting there - and that you are much more intelligent than you would want people to believe."
Asuka chuckled again, despite herself. "Stop me when I'm wrong."

The blue-haired boy hadn't said much, but, as Asuka looked over him, he felt as if he's spilled his entire life story. It looked to Kenji like she had more questions, wanted to know more, but didn't know how to simply ask.
She talked about her family like they were unimportant, and that bothered Kenji a bit. His mother was the the most important person in his life and always had been, he had no idea how someone could act like their parents - or parent, in Kenji's situation - meant nothing to them.
He kept quiet about that, though. Listening to Asuka talk had a comforting feeling, and Kenji didn't want to give her a reason to shut up, or snap at him and hurl a table at him or something.
Asuka then went on to list things she believed to be true about Kenji - hitting the nail right on the head with almost every statement she made. He chuckled when she mentioned his hair, and smiled a bit when she said that he was 'more intelligent than he wanted people to believe.'
"Stop me when I'm wrong." she told him, laughing a bit.
Nodding, Kenji met the girl's eyes. "You're not wrong - so far. You've actually been completely right about... basically everything you've said."
There was movement behind him, and Kenji turned his head to see someone emerge from the back. Without a second thought, he stood from the chair and made his way to the counter. Kenji could feel Asuka's eyes burning into his back, but he ignored it.
After placing an order for two coffees, Kenji turned to face her again, leaning against the counter. "You're good," he told her, grateful once again that they were the only ones there. "I don't have anything figured out about you. Other than your hostile tendencies and how cold the tips of your fingers are." His cheeks turned a bit pink at that. "I don't play detective with people anymore, so just tell me about you."
The shop-worker placed their drinks on the counter and Kenji payed quickly, taking the coffees back to where Asuka sat. Offering her the mug with more of the brown liquid in it, he sat back down and waited.

"You're not wrong - so far. You've actually been completely right about... basically everything you've said." Well, of course she'd been right - analysing people was one of the things she was best at. Asuka appreciated how he hadn't acted like her little exposition was strange in the slightest; though, in truth, she was aware that it kind of was. Most would have been more than a little unsettled that she'd been paying that much attention to little details, but she couldn't help it, that was just how her mind worked.
Asuka heard the sounds from behind the counter and was preparing to get up and get their coffee, but Kenjij beat her to the punch. At first, she glared at the back of his head as he was walking up; she liked to be in control, and here he was, usurping her. But, slowly, her expression softened, defrosting entirely by the time he'd ordered and turned back around to face her. It was hard for her to be angry at him, it seemed. "You're good," he said, looking calm, collected, and vaguely - vaguely, mind you -handsome as he leaned against the counter. "I don't have anything figured out about you. Other than your hostile tendencies and how cold the tips of your fingers are." He'd blushed slightly, the flush of colour barely perceptible in the dim lighting. It looked pretty ridiculous on top of his serious face, but it was also.. endearing, in a way. "I don't play detective with people anymore, so just tell me about you."
"Detective?" Asuka laughed blithely, genuinely. "I always wanted to be one of those when I was a kid. I soaked up mysteries like a sponge - I still do, from time to time. I like analysing people; no, it's more than that I like to do it. I can't help it. It's like my brain is wired to do it, or something. The funny part is that I can see what's on the surface with you, but nothing else. That's never happened before."
Why was she telling him all this? It was scary, to be honest - she'd never felt this comfortable talking to someone before. She'd always been talkative, but had no one to have conversations with. It was nice. Kenji was nice.
"So while I can tell that you like books, are tall and handsome in a way that most would find intimidating, and play the guitar, I don't know much about you, either." Asuka took another sip from her coffee, it tasted great. "...and as awful as it sounds, I'm kind of glad I hit you with that door."

"So while I can tell that you like books, are tall and handsome in a way that most would find intimidating, and play the guitar, I don't know much about you, either." Asuka said, sipping her coffee.
"There isn't much to me other than that. I'm not exactly a 'complex character.'" Kenji shrugged half heartedly, bringing his own mug to his lips. The coffee smelled heavenly, and tasted even better. It hadn't occurred to him to ask Asuka how she liked her coffee until he had sat back down in his chair. The dark-haired boy hoped what he had ordered would be alright, and he was so wrapped up in his thoughts that he hadn't registered Asuka's second statement.
"...and as awful as it sounds, I'm kind of glad I hit you with that door."
Thankfully, he had swallowed his coffee before he'd heard her, because a large, genuine laugh flew out of his mouth. A beaming smile followed soon after and he had to set his mug down on a nearby table to keep from spilling it. He hadn't expected Asuka to say something like that, let alone admit it so bluntly.
Reaching up to touch the bandage she had put on him, Kenji replied, "I'm glad you hit me with the door, too." Still chuckling softly, Kenji reached for his mug and took another drink, relishing the warmth that was running through him, though, he didn't know if that was because of the coffee or his company. He would have assumed the latter. "Hope your coffee's okay," he added, at kind of a loss for words.
There was a comfortable silence between the two for a moment - like what existed between two old friends. Kenji still had so many more questions he wanted to ask her, but as he watched her take another drink of her own mug - her eyelids dropping a bit and her smile still there - the words left Kenji's mind as quickly as the breath left his lungs.
"What's your favorite play? Or playwright?" he asked, recovering in a matter of seconds. "And which play brought on you love for them?" He asked so many questions, but Kenji felt a bit odd just sitting there staring at her, no matter how comfortable the silence. The boy didn't want Asuka to believe that he only stuck around because she was pretty, that wasn't it at all, but she was - very pretty. What Kenji liked more than anything, though, was the way it seemed that she wasn't holding back.

”There isn’t much to me other than that. I’m not exactly a ‘complex character.’” Kenji said, shrugging and taking another sip out of the mug in his hands. Asuka was under the impression that he truly believed this about himself, and for the most part, it seemed as though the statement was truthful. Maybe that was what she liked about him, how uncomplicated everything between them felt. Most people - herself included - wouldn’t be able to function without some sort of facade; and yet here sat a boy who saw no need for one. She liked that about him, she liked it a lot.
And then, Kenji laughed so hard that he had to set his mug down. Surprised, and also happy that he appreciated her sense of humor, Asuka laughed a little, too. He really wasn’t intimidated by her, was he? “I’m glad you hit me with the door, too,” Kenji said, pointing to the wound on his forehead before taking another drink. “Hope your coffee’s okay.”
“Don’t worry, it’s great.” Asuka took another sip, looking back at him. “I usually drink it black, but this hits the spot, too.” It went silent for a while, neither of them saying anything; though this silence was spawned from not needing to say anything rather than awkwardly having nothing to say.
”What’s your favorite play? Or playwright?” Kenji asked, mind returning from wherever it had scurried off to. “And which play brought on you love for them?”
Asuka thought for a moment before responding, amazed that someone was actually asking her stuff like this, that someone actually wanted to pay attention to her. “At the risk of sounding like your garden variety pseudo-thespian, Shakespeare is really my favourite. I.. I love how he writes, how you can feel his own sarcasm and wit beneath the characters’s dialogue. I’ve always found it somewhat amusing that people interpret Romeo and Juliet as a tragic love story, when he really wrote it to parody the stupidity and myopic tendencies of teenage infatuation. It’s still sad, of course, but there’s a message beneath the surface.” There she went again, rambling on and on to him. Someone was actually, completely, willingly listening to her. Asuka would have gladly listened to Kenji if he wanted to talk, but, no. It was all about her.
“It was Beauty and the Beast - you know, the Westerner one where the enchantress turns a man into a beast to mirror his ugly interior? I was the heroine for that one, and I loved being her character. She was delicate as a princess, but there was this.. fire, within her. I admired her. I wanted to be her, because in the end, she got to be happy. When I went home, I tried to remember how happy she’d been, how she stood strong in the face of things that only seemed more and more insurmountable, and.. nevermind.” Asuka sighed, eyes downcast. She hadn’t wanted to delve into her past, it would only drag down the atmosphere, and she didn’t want Kenji to worry about it. That was her problem, and her problem alone.
“Sorry,” Asuka said, forcing a light smile. Maybe if she asked him questions - she was curious about him, anyway - Kenji would forget all about it. “Who’s your favourite musician, and why? Oh, and what’s your favourite book?”

Taking another small sip before setting his mug down again, Kenji sat and waited while Asuka thought of her answer. It didn't seem to take her long to make her words flow - almost like Asuka had had the answer prepared long ago but couldn't find anyone to ask the questions. She began with, “At the risk of sounding like your garden variety pseudo-thespian," which made Kenji's smile grow exponentially, but then she said 'Shakespeare,' and her words seemed to falter a bit. asuka explained her point-of-view concerning 'Romeo and Juliet' and Kenji found himself nodding almost enthusiastically. Everyone he had ever encountered had told him that 'Romeo and Juliet' had been the greatest love-story ever written, and Kenji honestly believed that they said the things that they did because of him - trying to impress him or make him think they are smart - and usually, Kenji would hold up a hand and tell them he understood, when really he just wanted them to shut up. Asuka was different, she wasn't trying to impress him with her opinions, she was simply being herself. Kenji found that to be more impressive. Asuka ended the explanation with, "It’s still sad, of course, but there’s a message beneath the surface," and Kenji smiled just a bit wider. She then began to tell him about her favorite play, and why it was her favorite. “It was Beauty and the Beast," Asuka said, "you know, the Westerner one where the enchantress turns a man into a beast to mirror his ugly interior?" Her justification of this seemed more... Kenji didn't know, real? Than the last few things she had said. "She was delicate as a princess, but there was this.. fire, within her. I admired her." Asuka continued for a few moments, cutting herself off before she could dive in too deep. Kenji smiled softly, knowing how she felt. The unmistakeable urge to comfort the girl in front of him presented itself again, and this time, it was harder to hold back. Kenji wanted to reach over, place his hand on hers, and just... smile, or something, to let Asuka know that she could trust him, tell him anything she wanted to and he wouldn't tell a soul. Before Kenji had the opportunity, though, Asuka was apologizing and changing the subject to him. “Who’s your favorite musician, and why? Oh, and what’s your favorite book?” the dark-haired girl asked, smiling a slightly pained smile. Taking a deep breath, Kenji replied, "I... I don't know if I have a favorite. I like a lot of the new American music that's been coming out, but I've never really had a favorite. Zeppelin's pretty good, and Pink Floyd's alright, too, but I haven't found a bad or musician that I like enough to call a favorite, y'know?" Kenji didn't know if he was making sense. He scrubbed a hand over his face, racking his brain for the words to explain his blunder. "I guess I don't have a favorite because it's not out there yet. It may sound conceited, but I'd like to believe that someday I might be a favorite."He waited a moment for the words to sink in and hopefully become clearer to Asuka. Kenji didn't know why he was suddenly babbling. He only did this around his family. Then again, he really felt that comfortable in the dark-haired girl's presence. It was odd, but his smile reappeared nonetheless. "Favorite book... Hmm..." Kenji mused, tapping a finger against his bottom lip. "If I had to pick only one, I'd say 'Fragile Things' by Neil Gaiman. It's short stories, and they're all really great." Kenji leaned back in his chair again, sighing, "It has a lot of really nice lines, as well. 'Harlequin has given you his heart, you must discover its beat yourself.'" The dark haired boy quoted. He could hardly contain his smirk. If Asuka hadn't picked up the hints by now, hopefully she would understand his lack of subtlety this time. Still smirking, Kenji asked, "You said you liked to read, as well. What's your favorite book?"(OOC: Hi :3 I felt bad about not replying sooner, so I kind of... got REALLY carried away with this one. Also, the story Kenji quoted is here if you're curious!)

Asuka could tell that Kenji genuinely liked listening to her talk; he’d nodded in agreement several times during the course of their rather one-sided conversation. He was definitely on par with her own intelligence, his agreement over Romeo and Juliet and the fact that he hadn’t once seemed confused over her word choice the key indicators. He’d seemed sympathetic, when she accidentally mentioned her family, but hesitated in doing anything to comfort her - which was okay. Asuka wasn’t sure whether she wanted his pity or not; she was amazed that he had picked up on what a sore topic was, that he even cared at all. What was going on inside his head? For the first time, she found herself unable to even speculate.
Kenji talked for a while about his musical tastes, which, for the most part, conformed to her predictions earlier. He liked classic rock - although it was kind of surprising that he liked recent music, too. Most of the recent American music she’d heard had been terrible; but she supposed that he must prefer bands of a more underground nature. Asuka smiled as he stated that he hoped to become a favourite - ambition was a good quality to have, and it made him seem even more alluring to her. “No, no.” she said, smiling a little. “It’s good to be ambitious, and if you’re at Aozora, I’m sure you can do it.” Taking another drink from her coffee mug, she realised how strangely she was behaving. It was completely out of character for her to do anything less than be completely abrasive, yet somehow - the incident with the door aside - she’d managed to be… charming, if anything could be gleaned by the way he was so obviously happy to be around her. Kenji must be special, she thought. “You’ll have to play for me, sometime.”
Asuka lit up the moment Kenji mentioned Neil Gaiman - he was one of her favourite authors of all time. “‘Harlequin has given you his heart, you must discover its beat yourself.’” he said, delivering them in such a way that she wondered if he could have been an actor as well. Undertones of flirtation had been present as well, and she unwillingly flushed a little at this realisation. “I love that book! Neil Gaiman’s writing is lovely,” Asuka exclaimed, nodding in agreement. “There are so many fragile things, after all. People break so easily, and so do dreams and hearts.” This was crazy, why were they clicking so well? A normal person would have run away by now - would have figured out that she was crazy and aggressive and would most likely throttle them for looking at her the wrong way. But Kenji… Kenji looked at her through his pubescent, smitten eyes like there wasn’t a point in looking at anything else. Fuck. Why? Asuka was afraid that he’d want to get too close, and that she’d end up tarnishing him in the process. She was so ugly on the inside, so twisted and gnarled that she couldn’t even recognize herself when she was stupid enough to think about it. ”You said you liked to read, as well. What’s your favorite book?” Kenji asked, pulling her back to the earth where she was drinking coffee and having a nice time with a tall, good-looking guitar player who couldn’t take his eyes off of her. Why couldn’t she just enjoy it?
“Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov,” Asuka said, wondering whether he’d assume anything about her due to its rather twisted subject matter. “He’s one of the greatest writers I’ve ever seen - and while the subject matter is a little.. iffy, I feel like people don’t give it enough of a chance. It’s really quite beautifully written.” She paused, drinking the last of her coffee. “I also enjoyed The Scarlet Letter and Fahrenheit 451 - there’s a million other books I’ve loved, but those three are at the top of my list."

Asuka smiled a very small smile, taking another sip of her coffee. “No, no. It’s good to be ambitious, and if you’re at Aozora, I’m sure you can do it. You’ll have to play for me, sometime.”
That statement caused Kenji's cheeks to heat up. If he were being completely honest, he would have told Asuka that, since they had begun discussing music, Kenji had been trying to decide what he wanted to play for her. Of course, Kenji couldn't do anything at the moment because his guitar was in his room, and his brain was becoming more and more empty as he sat there with Asuka.
No, that wasn't true. Kenji's mind was absorbing everything Asuka told him, every word she spoke. She was so... endearing. Not a lot of the things she said surprised him, but the way that she said them made his brain whirl. It was weird, very weird for Kenji to have no other desires than to be with this one person at the moment. He really had no where else he would rather be.
"Of course," Kenji smiled at her, his cheeks still a faint pink. "Whenever you have a free moment."
Asuka's answers finally bubbled up, giving Kenji something else to focus on - something that wasn't her eyes or smile, something less embarrassing to be caught focusing on.
"I love that book! Neil Gaiman’s writing is lovely," Asuka exclaimed, nodding at the boy. “There are so many fragile things, after all. People break so easily, and so do dreams and hearts.”
To Kenji, it sounded like Asuka was speaking from experience, and he didn't like that at all. She was the kind of girl that Kenji believed should never frown. The blue-eyed girl looked much more beautiful when she smiled.
Answering Kenji's second question with a very quick, 'Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov' Asuka continued. “He’s one of the greatest writers I’ve ever seen - and while the subject matter is a little.. iffy, I feel like people don’t give it enough of a chance. It’s really quite beautifully written.”
The dark-haired boy nodded, agreeing once again with watch his companion had said. She made a good point. The novel really was beautifully written, and Kenji had met many a person that dismissed it quickly because of what it was about.
He watched Asuka for a moment, his thoughts tumbling around in his head recklessly. Kenji couldn't think of anything appropriate to ask someone he had just met. Asuka's family and past seemed to be a touchy subject, but she acted as if she trusted him enough.
There was... one question he had. Merely a quick 'yes' or 'no' answer would suffice as well, but Kenji didn't know if now was a good time to ask her.
It took him a moment, but he finally decided to do so. "Asuka," he began, luckily catching her gaze on the first try. "Would you like to go on a proper date sometime?"

Kenji blushed at her suggestion - had he been thinking of it already? He seemed the type to serenade the girls he liked, and Asuka would have been lying if the thought didn't make her want to swoon a little. "Okay." Kenji kept making her smile, and she couldn't help but smile a little more.
The look in his eyes had been a little strange when she quoted Fragile Things; what was going on inside his head? Asuka had only quoted a book - it wasn't like she'd been about to cry, or anything. Damn it. She wished for a moment that she could tell what he was thinking, but decided against it. Being unreadable was part of his charm.
Asuka's smile came back as he nodded in agreement over her opinion of Lolita; it was a small matter, simply an opinion, but it made her respect his intellect all the more. Again, a silence passed between the two; Asuka tried her hardest to stay focused as Kenji looked at her, no doubt thinking of appropriate things to ask her. Though she wanted to talk to him, she couldn't think of anything to say, either - in truth, she was afraid that she'd somehow fuck it up, and he'd never want to speak to her again.
"Asuka," Kenji said, pulling her out of her own thoughts. Their eyes met, and a torrent of uneasiness swirled around in her stomach, but she refused to let it show. "Would you like to go on a proper date sometime?"
Again, Asuka was speechless. Of course I would! screamed the voice in her head, the one that was constantly fighting to keep her afloat. It'd be so easy, so fucking easy, to say yes - but she was so disgusting, and Kenji was so wonderful. It wouldn't be fair to him; he didn't have a clue that getting any closer to her would be equivalent to opening Pandora's Box: pointless, masochistic. Don't fucking give up here, said the voice, try to be fucking happy for once, Asuka. Say yes.
Asuka thought about it for another moment, aware that Kenji would be a tad taken aback by her hesitation. She didn't want to be selfish and she didn't want to hurt him, but there was no way she could have said anything other than yes.
"Of course, Kenji." Asuka said, smiling slightly, pretending like she'd never second-guessed it at all. "I'd love to."

Kenji was still holding his breath when she answered him. He contemplated fiddling with his thumbs, but that would just make him look like an impatient ass.
The truth was, he'd wait forever for Asuka to decide, and, if she said no, then he'd ask again sometime down the line, when they knew each other better and --
"Of course, Kenji." Asuka replied, smiling a very small smile. "I'd love to."
All of the breath in Kenji's lungs left in a large woosh! and a grin became plastered to his face. Inside, he was screaming and jumping around like a girl.
Kenji did really like Asuka, and he was glad that, on some level, she liked him, too. She wasn't intimidated by him -- it was probably the other way around, in some way -- and had actually listened to what he was saying. Knowing you have someone like that is a great feeling.
His eyes met hers for a moment before he spoke again. "How about Friday, then?" Kenji smiled at her again. "Actually, I already have the perfect plan."
END.
