"M-Mommy why are you going?" The small blonde girl whimpered, tugging on the white dress that Sora would never be able to forget. He stood next to Emi, chin pressed against his chest as Emi tugged at his hand. "Sora, lemme go!" His sister cried tugging and tugging. It was no use, Sora wasn't going to let go. He'd never let go of Emi, after today she would be the only person he had left.
The world was moving in and out of focus. He had watched for years as his father's abandonment ate away at his mother. Years of waking up in the middle of the night to pick her up off of the floor because she had come home in a drunken fit, of waking up to the sound of her sobbing, but until now she had always pulled through. Sora had loved that about her. He loved that through all her pain she could live on for them. She had loved them that much. She had.
The shaking boy couldn't take his eyes off of his shoes, tiny dark drops appearing below him. Throughout this whole thing, he didn't realize he was crying. His mother was leaving. She hadn't said anything was permanent, but they knew. They could feel that she was at the end of her rope and this was her letting go. She was giving up on them, and they knew it.
There was no breakfast that morning -- something their mom had always made a priority -- that was the first sign that something was wrong. The next was her disinterest in everything about them. Their mother was the type of woman to stick her nose into every single little detail of their uneventful lives. And the biggest sign, she had work on at a Saturday. Never in his entire life had his mother had work on a Saturday. She would be see them off to school and be waiting for them when they got home, but today she was dressed for work as they reached the door, "I'll drop you off at school." She had said, a smooth lie that they caught right as she said it. That's when the panic began.
"Emi, sweety go in the car, you're going to be late for school?" She baited, continuing the lie.
"B-But Mommy you--" she cried, his arms shaking violently. Emi was crying, crying hard begging for a mother that she wasn't going to get back. Sora didn't know how to feel. He was burning with rage, but underneath that thin layer his heart was aching. Mommy is going to leave us.
"Emiko." Sora hissed, pulling her backward away from their mother.
She flinched at the use of her full name, and stood staring up at him, her twin blues tearing up. He almost doubled over from the pain that shot through his torso. Emi wasn't supposed to cry. Emi was supposed to be happy. All the time. He was supposed to protect her from hurt. He was her big brother. "Emi, go inside and lock the door." He whispered his voice cracking.
"S-Sora."
"I'll be there in a second." His voice was shaking hard now, thick with tears. She pried her trembling hand out of his boyish ones and backed away from them, her blonde curls bouncing.
He couldn't turn to face his mother. He couldn't look into the blue eyes she had given him, or see their matching blonde hair, he didn't want to see their resemblance.
"Sora, my little man..." She began, pulling him by his chin to face him. The smell of her perfume swirled around him, another thing he would never forget.
He slapped her hand away, and took a clumsy step backward. "Why?" He demanded, his tiny hands balled into fists at his sides. She stared at him with the same smile, taunting and fake. "Answer me, damnit!" His tears sprayed as he screamed at her.
Sora was tired and hurting. He had never felt so... sad. His heart hammered against his ribs so hard that Sora felt as if it would break right through the bones and out of his chest. He couldn't see through the tears but he knew she was there just watching. "Why are we not good enough? We could make you happy mommy. Please... Please don't go." When had he gotten on his knees? They stung as they hit the ground, shaking.
"Take care of Emi." Was all she said in return.
His head snapped up, to look at her walking away. Her white dress slapping her legs as the wind blew past them. "FINE!" He cried, after her, pushing himself back onto his numb legs, "GO! GO AND NEVER EVER COME NEAR US AGAIN!" Sora was sobbing now, horrible gasping sounds escaping his lips. "WE DON'T NEED YOU!" His legs gave out again, but this time he didn't try to get up, "We don't need you." He repeated over and over to himself.
"Bye, my little man." The sound of a car door shutting filled the air and she was gone.
