"I.. I try, well.. I used to try. They don't call back or e-mail back or.. They just act like we don't exist.."
And then, Arlette wished she hadn't asked that. And again, only idiots wish for things. She would say, i'm sorry, but what good would that make? "Well... I don't know, but I'm sure I won't act like that, okay?" Arlette swallowed, realising how good she had it back home, all her life. "I promise." Her parents always had her back, and she was close to her cousins. Arlette knew she had taken it all for granted before. A lump of guilt hung in her heart.
Then Arlette turned to Yumiko, covering whatever flutter of emotion she had on her face before. "Don't worry.. I'm glad I can talk to someone, though.. I don't really know you as well as I wish I did.." Biting her lip, Yumiko gave an apologetic smile. "I.. I'm sure that we.. we'll become good friends, right? So it's okay.."
"I'm certain we'll be. And if it isn't okay, I'll try to make it okay. Try." Arlette held out her hand, and lifted out her pinky to Yumiko. Childish as it is, it always worked for her. A part of her was always a child, and she knew that naivety could be both blessing and curse. "Promise we'll be friends and all?" [/teal]She paused, and added hurriedly, jokingly, hoping it wasn't awkward for Yumiko. "I don't know if you guys pinkypromise here, but I mean, like, where I come from, it's like sacred."
